Selection Workflow

Draw Bench Chain Selection

A drawing-first checklist for new chain, replacement chain and sprocket-matching projects.

Start With Evidence

Use an equipment drawing when available. For replacement work, combine photos with measured dimensions and a chain sample. Do not infer pitch or pin size from a photograph alone.

Measure The Chain

Measurement What To Record
Pitch Center distance between adjacent articulating joints
Inner width Clear width between the inside faces of sidebars
Plate height Maximum sidebar height
Plate thickness Inner and outer plate thickness where they differ
Pin diameter Measured at an unworn section when possible
Pin length Overall and shoulder dimensions if applicable
End connection Carriage or attachment details
Installed length Pitches or measured overall chain length

Define The Duty

  • Maximum required pulling force or machine rating
  • Normal working pull and operating speed
  • Start/stop frequency and shock loading
  • Hours per day and operating cycle
  • Lubrication method and maintenance interval
  • Scale, dust, coolant, moisture or corrosive exposure
  • Operating temperature

Check The Sprocket

Provide tooth count, face width, bore and available pitch/tooth geometry. If the existing sprocket will be reused, include photographs and a dimensional drawing where possible.

Avoid Common Errors

Photo Only

Visual similarity does not prove dimensional interchangeability.

Unknown Load

Without pull data, a chain can be dimensionally similar yet unsuitable for the duty.

Ignored Sprocket

Chain and sprocket geometry must be reviewed together for replacement work.

Selection FAQ

Can you quote from an old chain sample?

Yes, a sample can support replacement identification, but the RFQ should also include machine duty and sprocket information.

Can I use a standard roller chain number?

Only when the machine documentation proves that a standardized roller-chain configuration is intended. Draw bench chains are often engineered around the application.

Which strength value should I provide?

Provide the machine pull requirement or working-load information from the equipment documentation. Do not substitute an unrelated catalogue ultimate-strength number.

Do you need a sprocket drawing?

It is strongly preferred when the existing sprocket will be retained or when tooth geometry is not otherwise documented.
